Project: ROB-5 Retaining Wall Repair
Client: West Central Railway
Location: Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh
Contractor: Savinaya Infratech Pvt. Ltd.
Design Vetting Authority: IIT Bombay
1. Project Background The Reinforced Earth (RE) wall at ROB-5, Itarsi, constructed in 2022, exhibited significant distress within three years. Issues included panel bulging near the abutment, road cracks, and soil leakage through panel joints. A gabion wall was installed as a temporary protective measure.

2. Problem Assessment
– Inadequate drainage system
– Soil loss through joints
– Localized instability near abutment
– Restricted working space (~1.7 m)
3. Adopted Solution
A Soil Nailing rehabilitation system was designed by Savinaya Infratech Pvt. Ltd. and vetted by IIT Bombay.
4. Methodology
– Panel marking and core cutting
– SDA nail drilling and installation
– Grouting for bonding
– Bearing plate and nut fixing

5. Drainage Improvements
– Installation of weep holes
– Geotextile wrapping
– Joint sealing

6. Challenges & Solutions
Limited space: staged drilling with couplers
Panel safety: controlled core cutting
Soil leakage: geotextile filtration
Height issues: suspended platform
7. Execution of Side Walls
Soil nailing was executed as per approved design across side walls.
8. Outcome
– Stabilized RE wall
– Prevented further deformation
– Improved drainage
– Increased structural life

9. Conclusion
Soil nailing proved to be an effective rehabilitation solution ensuring long-term performance.
